How to replace bad habits with good habits?

Habits play a very important part in our life. They have their effect on everything we do. Our life is made up of collection of habits. Some are good and some are bad. The practice of the good ones enriches our life. The practice of the bad ones weakens our life.
Here are some steps to follow:
We must sincerely intend to give up bad habits and want to cultivate good habits. When we suffer the effects, we understand the importance of giving up bad habits.
Using the smoking habit as an example, some people give it up when they calculate how much amount they have wasted on it over the past several years. Others give up because of the health risks.
If we have a strong desire for giving up a bad habit, it will have less hold on us. If there is anything we want to do keenly, we shall be prepared to make the effort. Mobilise all the rational arguments against the habit you want to overcome. It may be consideration of health, money, self respect or other people's opinion. Fight against the habit with all the power at your command.
Mark Twain said : "A habit cannot be tossed out of the window; It must be dropped down the stairs a step at a time".
This means that we do not need to set some impossible goal before ourselves, such as to give up smoking overnight. But we must be preapared to stop smoking for one day and then for another, and then another. Thought and feeling are thus consolidated by an action that is within the power of the person concerned.
Publicise your resolution : If nobody knows about our resolution to give up a bad habit, them nobody knows if we break it. This is not good since much of our behaviour is determined by social approval or disapproval. Therefore, it will be helpful to let a few of our trusted friends know what we are about. We must be willing to accept their watchfulness.
Slowly the undesirable thought can be replaced, consciously by a desirable one since both cannot be held in the mind at the same time.
Use the visual and verbal methods of habit building. The eye and the ear are great aids to the establishment of habitual thinking and acting.
Another effective way of practising new habits is to write them down, to concentrate on the visual aspect of the words and to read them aloud. To read such affirmations slowly but confidently is to plant them deeply in the subconscious mind, which will then come to our aid in the practice of good habits in day to day life.
In these ways bad habbits are driven out, new ones established, and the whole pattern of our life becomes an increasingly positive, creative, and satisfying one.
